Architectural Competition in Adelaide

The existing Adelaide Hospital campus is to be relocated next year to a new building under construction and the South Australian Government launched a two stage competition seeking ideas as to how to best develop this important site at the edge of the city, adjoining two university campus’s and the heritage Botanic Gardens.

126 entries were received from around the world.

Ours was the only one from NZ.

The 6 shortlisted stage one entries were announced on 13 Sept this year.

Sadly we were not among them.

However we are not unhappy.

Our office has a policy of entering architectural competitions where we think that as a result of favourable circumstances and intelligent judges, we have a chance.

Competitions provide an opportunity to propose creative ideas able to fly free of the legislative, technical and budgetary restraints which characterise real life.

The engagement of the public in the judging process is also a valuable counter to the common view that architectural discourse only matters to academics and wealthy clients.

The competition process promotes public design like few other methods.
