Zoo View

It was a sunny Sunday and so as you do Miss M and I went to the zoo.

I hadn’t been for 5 years.

I knew the animals were diverse but the buildings are now too.

This was a pleasant surprise.

There are now ancient cages overlain with Patagonian facades, and a transparent vaulted gathering space substituting for the lost elephant Kamala.

Our close relatives, the chimps, enjoy a late modernist glassy house (but without the gib walls).

The suburban outhouse animal shelters that I saw with the kids five years ago have been replaced by rustic structures who’s styles often reflect the animals home country.

The Council is to be congratulated for creating an environment so much more pleasant than say Johnsonville or Churton Park, where the human inhabitants do not enjoy such architectural diversity or botanical splendour.
